Answer engine optimisation: be the answer, not the tenth link.

Search increasingly answers the question on the results page. If your page is the source that answer is lifted from, that is worth more than a blue link three positions higher.

What is answer engine optimisation (AEO)?

Answer engine optimisation is structuring content so search engines and AI assistants can extract a direct, correct answer from it and attribute that answer to you. It focuses on question-shaped headings, self-contained passages that make sense lifted out of context, unambiguous entity and factual clarity, and schema markup that matches what the page visibly says.

  • Answers written to survive being quoted without surrounding context.
  • Question-shaped headings matched to how people actually ask.
  • Markup that mirrors the visible page, never contradicts it.

Why it matters

Position one is no longer the top of the page.

Google now answers a large share of informational queries directly, above every organic result, with two or three cited sources. The practical consequence is that ranking first and not being the cited source can produce less traffic than ranking fourth and being quoted.

This is not a reason to stop doing SEO; it is a change in what a page has to be. Extraction rewards a specific shape of content: a question asked plainly, answered completely in the next forty to eighty words, then expanded. Most B2B pages do the opposite — three paragraphs of positioning before the answer appears.

What extraction actually rewards

Why ranking is not enough

These are the characteristics shared by the passages that get lifted. None of them are tricks; they are simply a clearer way to write:

  • You rank well but impressions are up while clicks are flat or down.
  • A competitor is cited in the AI Overview for your main terms.
  • Your pages answer the question only after several paragraphs of preamble.
  • There are no question-shaped headings anywhere on the site.
  • FAQ content exists but is not marked up, or is marked up wrongly.
  • Key facts about your business differ between pages.

Scope

What AEO work covers.

All of it is editorial and structural. There is no technical shortcut to being the best answer to a question.

  1. Question research

The real questions your buyers ask, from People Also Ask, Search Console queries, your own sales calls and support tickets — which is the source most of this is missing.

  2. Answer-first restructuring

Each page reshaped so the direct answer appears immediately under a question-shaped heading, with the detail following rather than preceding it.

  3. Extractable formatting

Definition paragraphs, comparison tables, ordered steps and short lists — the structures extraction consistently favours over prose.

  4. Schema & entity clarity

FAQPage, HowTo, Article and Organisation markup that matches the visible content, plus consistent naming of your own entities across the site.

  5. Fact consistency

One canonical set of facts about the business — what you do, where, for whom — stated the same way everywhere, because contradictions suppress confident extraction.

  6. Citation tracking

Monitoring whether you are the cited source for your target questions, which is a different measurement from rank tracking and needs its own process.

Deliverables

What AEO changes.

Measured on whether you are cited and on the quality of what arrives, because answer-engine traffic behaves differently from classic organic clicks.

  1. Cited where you were previously just listed

Appearing as the source inside the answer rather than below it. Visibility at the top of the page, and attribution that carries authority.

  2. Content that reads better for people too

Answer-first writing is simply clearer. The same restructuring that helps extraction reliably improves time on page and conversion for human readers.

  3. Fewer qualifying questions on enquiries

When the page answers the obvious questions properly, the enquiries that arrive are from people already past them. Sales calls start further along.

  4. A durable factual footprint

A consistent, well-marked-up set of facts about your business, which is the asset that carries over into generative search as well.

Is this the right answer?

When answer engine optimisation is worth doing — and when it is not.

We would rather lose a project at this stage than six weeks in. If the right-hand column describes you, say so and we will tell you what we would do instead.

Worth doing when

  • Impressions are rising while clicks are flat or falling.
  • A competitor is cited in the AI Overview for your main terms.
  • Your buyers ask specific questions with definite answers.
  • Your pages bury the answer under three paragraphs of positioning.

Probably not when

  • Your pages are not indexed yet — technical SEO comes first.
  • Your market is purely transactional with no informational search behind it.
  • You want to mark up questions nobody asks to game eligibility.
  • Nobody will let you publish a plain answer because legal wants hedging.

How we deliver

How we do AEO.

We start with your sales and support conversations, because they contain the questions buyers actually ask rather than the ones a keyword tool suggests.

  1. Phase one

    Harvest the real questions

Search Console queries, People Also Ask, your sales calls and support tickets, consolidated into a ranked question map with commercial value attached.

  2. Phase two

    Restructure the key pages

The highest-value pages rewritten answer-first, with question headings and extractable formatting, then marked up to match.

  3. Phase three

    Fill the gaps

New pages or sections for the questions nothing currently answers, written to the same standard rather than as filler.

  4. Phase four

    Track citation & iterate

Monitor which questions you are cited for, test rewrites where you are not, and feed what works back into the rest of the site.

What you receive

The things that actually land.

Artefacts, not adjectives. Everything below is listed in the scope document before a phase starts, so “done” is a defined state rather than an opinion.

  1. A ranked question map

The real questions your buyers ask, from Search Console, People Also Ask, your sales calls and support tickets, with commercial value attached.

  2. Restructured key pages

Rewritten answer-first under question-shaped headings, with the detail following rather than preceding it.

  3. Extractable formatting

Definition paragraphs, comparison tables, ordered steps and short lists — the structures extraction consistently favours.

  4. Valid schema that matches the page

FAQPage, HowTo, Article and Organisation markup mirroring the visible content. Markup that contradicts the page is a quality problem, not an optimisation.

  5. A canonical fact set

One agreed statement of what you do, for whom and where, used consistently everywhere. Contradictions suppress confident extraction.

  6. Citation tracking

Whether you are the cited source for your target questions — a different measurement from rank tracking, with its own process.

Golden Triangle

AEO for a considered B2B purchase.

Industrial and professional buying involves a long research phase conducted privately. AEO is how you are present during it.

  1. Research before contact Invisible phase A buyer specifying a system or a supplier researches extensively before making contact. Being the extracted answer during that phase shapes the shortlist you are not yet aware of.
  2. Specification questions Technical and precise Queries here are specific — tolerances, compliance, compatibility, lead times. These are exactly the questions with a definite answer, which is what extraction prefers.
  3. Local qualification Near me, still Buyers in this corridor genuinely do filter by location for anything needing site visits. Answering location-qualified questions properly is a real advantage here.

We do AEO for B2B businesses across Birmingham, Nottingham, Northampton, Leicester, Coventry and Derby, usually alongside technical SEO.

Technology

How we work on AEO.

Mostly research and editing. The tooling exists to find questions and to check whether we became the answer.

  • Search Console query data
  • People Also Ask mining
  • schema.org markup
  • Content structure audit
  • Entity consistency review
  • Snippet & Overview tracking
  • Answer-first editing
  • Sales call question harvest
  • Competitor citation analysis
  • Impression vs click analysis

Questions

Answer engine optimisation, answered plainly.

Asked by marketing teams watching impressions rise while clicks do not.

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO aims to rank a page in a list of results. AEO aims to have your content extracted as the answer itself — in an AI Overview, a featured snippet or a voice response — with your site named as the source. They share most of their foundations, but AEO changes how a page is written and structured, because extraction rewards a self-contained answer placed immediately under a question.

Does AEO reduce the traffic we get?

It can change its shape, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. Some informational queries that used to produce a click are now answered on the results page. The practical response is to be the cited source for those, which carries authority and still sends qualified visitors, and to make sure your commercial pages are strong for the queries that have always converted. Being absent from the answer is strictly worse than being in it.

How do you get into Google AI Overviews?

There is no submission and no guarantee, and anyone offering one is selling something else. What demonstrably helps is answering the question directly and completely in a self-contained passage near the top of a relevant page, using question-shaped headings, being factually consistent across your site, having schema that matches the visible content, and already being a credible result for the query.

Do we need FAQ schema for AEO?

It helps machines parse question and answer pairs, so it is worth having where you genuinely have FAQs. It is not sufficient on its own, and marking up questions nobody asks or answers that do not appear on the page is actively harmful — markup that contradicts visible content is a quality problem, not an optimisation.

How do you measure whether AEO is working?

By tracking citation rather than only position: whether your pages appear as a source for the questions you targeted, how impressions move relative to clicks, and whether the enquiries arriving have already passed the basic qualifying questions. We set the question set up front so the measurement is against a defined target rather than a general impression.

Can AEO work for a technical B2B business?

It works particularly well, because technical queries have specific, verifiable answers and relatively few sources answer them properly. A manufacturer who answers precise specification and compliance questions clearly is often the only credible candidate for extraction, which is a much easier position than competing for a broad commercial term.

Is this just adding FAQ schema?

No, and schema alone achieves very little. The work is structural and editorial: answering the question completely in a self-contained passage near the top of a relevant page, under a heading phrased the way people ask. Schema helps machines parse what is already there. Marking up questions nobody asks, or answers that do not appear on the page, is actively harmful.

Will this help with voice search too?

Yes, because it is the same mechanism. Voice assistants read out an extracted answer, so content written to be lifted cleanly performs in both. The practical difference is that voice rewards brevity even more strongly, which is another argument for answering in the first forty words.

How is this different from normal content writing?

Mostly in the order. Conventional B2B writing builds to a conclusion; answer-first writing leads with it and then justifies it. It also demands committing to specifics — numbers, limits, honest caveats — because a vague passage is not worth extracting. Most pages improve for human readers too.

Does this work for products as well as services?

Yes, and specification questions are some of the easiest to win. Compatibility, tolerances, materials, lead times and standards all have definite answers, very few sources answer them properly, and the buyer asking them is close to a purchase decision.
